もてあます【持て余す】
1 〔扱いにくくて困る〕 〈人が主語〉 do not know what to do 《with…》; be embarrassed 《with…》; find sb unmanageable; 〈対象が主語〉 be too much 《for…》; be more than one can manage [handle]; be beyond [out of] one's control; be unmanageable; be ungovernable; be uncontrollable; be unwieldy.

●両親も彼を持て余している. Even his parents don't know how to deal with him. | He is quite a handful even for his parents.

2 〔多すぎて処置に困る〕 〈人が主語〉 have too many [much] 《of…》; have sth on one's hands; 〈物が主語〉 lie (heavy) on one's hands.

●暇を持て余す have time on one's hands; have more leisure than one knows how to use [what to do with]

・エネルギーを持て余している若者 young people who have more energy than they know what to do with

・金を持て余す have more money than one needs [can spend].

●定年後私は時間を持て余していた. I had so much leisure after retirement that I didn't know what to do with it.

・彼はこれといってやる事がなくて, 体を持て余している. Having nothing to do in particular, he doesn't know what to do with himself.

・あの店では品物が売れないで持て余している. That store is burdened with a large [has too large a] stock of goods which do not sell.

・うちの庭でトマトがあまり取れたので持て余した. We had so many tomatoes in our garden that we couldn't eat all of them.
